HISTORY

In 1999 David Kyalo Kimanthi saw a need to address the plight of the growing number of orphans, people living with HIV/AIDS, poor widows, slum dwellers, and other disadvantaged groups. He was particularly concerned about the many slum children (mostly orphans) dropping out of school and resorting to crime, drugs, prostitution, and other social ills.

Coming from a background of poverty and having been assisted through Starehe Boys Centre, David approached community and church leaders and friends. With their support, Camp David Centre opened its gates in November 1999 as a children's rehabilitation centre.

In 2001, the centre was officially registered as an NGO and has since then expanded its activities. Motivated to truly help those in need, Camp David Centre’s community outreach continues to grow. The centre’s half acre of land is now home to a primary school, clinic, kitchen, vegetable garden, computer lab with an internet café, tailoring facilities, library and offices.

An additional centre in Kambu which hosts a first aid centre and teaches computer skill and tailoring was recently opened as well.
